In acute medical conditions, for example when you are injured or in pain, your body reacts to protect itself. However, sometimes your body creates a pain cycle: pain causes tension, which causes inflammation, which causes more pain. The therapist's work helps to break that cycle by stimulating certain nerve fibers and overriding the pain response from pain receptors.
For chronic medical conditions, the therapist’s approach focuses on stimulating your body's immune system and normalizing nervous system function, as well as providing specific work for your needs.
In both cases, the massage therapist's role is not to force your body to relax, but to teach or remind your body how to heal itself. Once that process is started, your body naturally takes over, and healing begins.
Techniques that the therapist may use include lymphatic drainage, muscle energy techniques, assisted stretching, myofascial release, Shiatsu bodywork, and other therapeutic massage techniques. The therapist also works with your other healthcare practitioners to develop the most appropriate treatment plan for your needs and lifestyle.
